N.Y. Judiciary Law Section 317
Stenographers of county courts


1.

The stenographer of the county court of each of the counties of Albany, Erie, Monroe, Oneida, Rensselaer, Jefferson and Niagara must attend each term of the said court where issues of fact in civil and criminal cases are triable. The stenographers of the county court of Kings and Queens counties must attend each term of said court. The stenographer of the county court of Jefferson county shall as a part of his official duties also act as stenographer to the grand jury of said county, and shall, at the request of the district attorney, attend preliminary hearings in criminal cases prior to the action of the grand jury thereupon.

The stenographers appointed in the various counties specified in subdivision two of § 198 (Appointment of stenographers of county courts)section one hundred and ninety-eight of this chapter, shall also report and transcribe opinions for the said county judges, as well as special proceedings where a stenographer is required, without additional compensation.

The stenographer of the county court of Niagara county shall within twenty days after notice by a party that he intends to appeal, make a case and exceptions or bill of exceptions in a civil or criminal action, or that briefs are to be made or arguments prepared in an action tried before the court without a jury, file with the clerk of said county a transcript of the minutes taken by him upon such trial.

Each of the stenographers appointed in the county court of Albany, Kings, Queens, Richmond and Bronx counties as prescribed in § 198 (Appointment of stenographers of county courts)section one hundred and ninety-eight of this chapter, may, with the consent of the county judge, or judges, appoint an assistant stenographer, to aid him in the discharge of his duties, whose compensation shall be paid by the stenographer appointing him, and is not a county charge.
